The number shows a "Private number". After some formalities, he asked whether I'm interested in an insurance policy called "Identity Guard". This offer is a collaboration with TMNet - it's an offer to all Streamyx users. I said NO, not interested.
He claimed that TMNet has given him all my details regarding this and starts to go through my information, asking me to confirm it. After confirming the details, he asked me for my credit card number. I told him no, I'm not interested a few times but he kept asking and calling. In the end, I (admit that I was stupid at the time >__< ) decided to give him my credit card number to get it over with.
He also said that they will send me the information of the policy to my personal email but until today, nothing.
Right after his call, I googled for Chartis Insurance and TMNet offers but there was nothing available. Nothing about their collaboration. I decided to contact the support number that he gave me: 1800 88 88 11 just to double confirm. I got the Chartis Insurance support. When I told them about the Identity Guard policy, they told me there's no such thing. They only have snatch guard, accident guard, etc. policies. My heart dropped.
So I asked for the guy who called me. The girl confirmed that there's a person name Fadzil Atan who is their telemarketer. Ok, not really a scam.
Few weeks gone by without any news from this person and nothing in the mail. When I check my bank account, they've already credited RM80 instead of the RM40 as promised. Found out later that they will charged you 2 months payment during the first payment.
Anyway, I finally decided to cancel it. I called their support line again on the 7th Sept 2010. The support person named Sri said that she can submit a report to cancel the subscription for me but since they've credited the amount earlier, I am still covered until November 2010. She also said that I can cancel it via phone or fax by writing in and gave me a report number.
The next day when I checked my account, guess what I saw... They've credited another RM80!!! How can they credit another RM80 just 18 days after the first transaction???!!! Does that mean I'm covered until January next year???
So, I called the support line again - 3rd time!
Another girl picked up, Belle. She then transferred me to another officer, Rina. Rina did some checking and guess what she told me.... That Fadzil guy enrolled me twice! So, they're actually charging me on the same policy - Identity Guard, twice! And in addition to that, they've already charged me with the next payment for the 3rd month, which means another RM40!
So, first enrollment, RM80+RM40=RM120.
Second enrollment, RM80+RM40=RM120.
Before I can bising-bising, luckily she promised to refund the RM120. But not for the first charges. She informed that my report for cancellation has been created. Currently I'm covered until the end of November 2010 and the cancellation is effective (for now) on the 1st of December 2010. She also said that an officer will call me after 5 working days (14 or 15 Sept 2010) to confirm my cancellation. If no, I'll have to call back. Or if I don't call, the cancellation will also proceed... which I doubt so. Seriously.. the next time you get a call like this, don't bother.. just say NO and end the call.
Updated on 15/09/2010: Some girl from Chartis called me on Monday (13/09/2010) to confirm my cancellation. To think she has the guts to ask if I want to prolong this stupid scam and wants to go through the "benefits" again with me. Also if RM40 is too much, she's recommending a more basic plan with only RM35... HAH! Like I'm going to fall for that again... Dame dayo! I cut her off and insisted on the cancellation. Now the only thing left is to wait and see...
Updated on 27/09/2010: Received the cancellation letter for the 1st enrollment. Checked my credit card account on 24/09 and guess what? They credited another RM80 on 09/09 and another RM40 on 21/09!!! Bugger enrolled me for the 3rd time!!! Sigh.. only found out after their office hour, so have to call on Monday.
Called on Monday (27/09). A girl named Redna transferred the call to Sri. Told her about the 3rd RM80 transaction but she said she has to report this issue... again... They will need some time to check.. ask me to call back after 14 days! WTF!!! And I should be expecting the RM120 cheque by end of October 2010. Issues so far:
1st enrollment - RM120 until end of Nov 2010 (cancellation effective 1st Dec 2010)
2nd enrollment - RM120 will be refund via cheque by end of October 2010
3rd enrollment - RM120, still under investigation, to call back after 14 daysSo far, I've raised this issue to consumer association. No feedback from them yet. Will see how it goes...
