If you've seen the movie, I bet you'll say the same.
I happen to stumble upon the poster a few weeks ago and I thought it's would just be another B-grade-ninja-epic/scary-movie-ish film. Until Tim mentioned that it actually received like super good reviews. So, we gave it a try.
Boy, was I sooo wrong. Kick-Ass transports the viewer into a world of superheroes without superpowers. It's like anime+first-person-shooter games+somewhat-slapstick comedy+John Woo's action sequences+Kill Bill, all blended into one fun filled extremely violent concoction. It's so good that you’ll ask for seconds. The movie starts with a guy in a superhero costume jumping off a skyscraper, spreading his mechanical wings and Wham!, landing head first onto a taxi parked over 100 feet below. The scene then closes with the protagonist saying, "That's not me, by the way".
With the increasing crime rates in their town, the protagonist, Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), your everyday geeky teenager wonders why no one has ever tried to be a superhero. Despite what his friends told him, he purchases a green wet suit online, wields 2 batons and goes out to fight law breakers as Kick Ass. First encounter got him stabbed and while bleeding profusely, he was ran over by a car. Resulting with him being hospitalized with metal plates inserted throughout his body and some nerve damage. But that did not change his mind.
We'll soon see that despite his enthusiasm and bravery, he just keeps getting his ass kicked. In a place not so far away, a father is attempting to shoot his little girl. He fired the gun, the girl fell flat on her back, got up and revealed that it didn't hurt as bad as she thought it would. Pretty screwed up huh? Well, not for these two. Turns out, they are a father-daughter duo crime fighting "superheroes", Mindy Macready aka Hit-Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) and Damon Macready aka Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage). Damon has been training his 11-year old daughter in hand-combat and firearm handling ever since she was a toddler. Their background story was later revealed when Damon's former cop partner, Marcus, discovers a comic book drawn by Damon in a secret weaponry room in their house. Hit Girl, Big Daddy and Kick ass will soon cross paths when mafia boss, Frank D’Amico puts out a bounty on the superheroes that are hurting his business.
The biggest controversy for this movie, is not about the amount of blood shed and violence shown but the amount of profane words uttered by Hit Girl. With the use of lines like "Okay you cunts, let's see what you can do now" or "Show's over, motherf***er" delivered by Moretz, this movie is Rated R by The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). Despite all that, it's really exciting to watch an 11-year old beating up men double her size. Moretz had to go through 2-3 months of hard training (by the same guy who trained Matt Damon for the BOURNE series) to do those stunts herself. Hit Girl basically stole the limelight with her brutal-yet-stylish kills, foul-mouthed dialogue, and her disarmingly sweet face. You just can't help but to hum along the background beat for when she storms a heavily armed D'Amico's penthouse. She's just too awesome.
Innocently lethal
In a movie that features shocking visuals, outrageous comedy and well-crafted action sequences, it's interesting to note that the actors and the characters they play are the more notable aspects of the film. I, for one, have not read the graphic novel but all in all, the movie certainly lives up to it’s name. And Hit Girl Rocks!!! You might want to check out this article before deciding to invest in the graphic novel.

Anyways, gotta thank the Malaysian censorship board somehow for not censoring much of the movie this time :p Oh yeah, we saw a 5 year old, hugging a box of popcorn, walking into the theatre with his Dad. Way to go, Dad...*sarcasm intended* (>__<)''' Oh, did I mentioned there are some nudity as well?
